Southern Charles Mix is New Dakota Rising Community Site

Southern Charles Mix Dakota Rising, a group organized to promote and lead the Dakota Rising program in southern Charles Mix County, has been chosen as a new Community Site for the state’s most successful entrepreneur development program. Dakota Rising, an economic development and community enhancement program of Dakota Resources, was created to build economic partnerships and assist local entrepreneurs to develop their small businesses as a path to a stronger regional economy.

“Southern Charles Mix Dakota Rising has shown a commitment to this program and a potential for success that will energize communities and kickstart small business development throughout the region,” said Beth Davis, president of Dakota Resources, the statewide community development organization whose goal is to stimulate financial and human investment in communities that are invested in themselves.

    Prairie Reader Competition Held in Armour

    Sidney Schroeder and Logan Picotte, members of the 2014 Wagner Community School Prairie Reader team, earned third place in the high school division of the Prairie Reader competition March 19 in Armour.

    The Prairie Reader competition is a reading quiz bowl based on an assigned reading list. Teams consist of one to four students and up to two alternates.     Students Attend Regional Science Fair

    Last week Tuesday, seven eighth grade students at Wagner Middle School attended the Regional Science Fair held at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD. The students who attended were: Colton Frei, Halley Zephier, Taylor Eitemiller, Sierra Juffer, Telsey Kaup, Carolyn Blaha, and Schylar Juffer.

    5th Grade DI Team Places Second at State

    The 5th Grade Destination Imagination team participated in the State DI Tournament at Pierre on March 29. At this tournament, each team was required to give an 8-minute presentation, which was evaluated by a team of judges. The fifth grade team placed second.

    Underdog Takes Second in Quiz Bowl

    On Tuesday, April 1, Scotland High School hosted their annual Pizza Quiz Bowl. Four students from Wagner High School planned to attend, but by the end of the school day, only one student remained. Margaret Doom, a senior at WCS, decided to go to Scotland, even though it meant she’d be competing alone instead of as part of a team. Other schools participating in the Pizza Bowl were Avon, Scotland, Menno, and Tripp-Delmont, with a total of 8 teams competing.

    The freezer units have been updated. Nineteen additional freezers have been added. This expanded space will allow Buche’s to stock more variety of frozen foods, especially, according to manager Chris McFayden, Asian and oriental foods.

    State FFA Degrees and Stars to be Awarded

    BROOKINGS, S.D. – 221 South Dakota FFA members will receive their State FFA Degree, with four of those individuals to be recognized as the State Star Farmer, Star in Agribusiness, Star in Ag Placement and Star in Agriscience, at the 86th South Dakota State FFA Convention in Brookings, S.D., April 6-8, 2014.

    The State FFA Degree is the highest degree of membership conferred by the South Dakota FFA Association. The requirements for this degree include:

    Make it Happen Conference Held at Wagner Community School

    Juniors and seniors were given a rare and valuable opportunity to experience pieces of their potential future last Tuesday, March 25.

    Wagner Community School hosted the “Make it Happen” conference for juniors and seniors from Wagner, Ethan, Lake Andes, South Central, Marty, Santee, Platte, Bon Homme, Armour, Avon, Parkston and Dakota Christian. In total, 398 students attended.

    USDA Encourages Early Registration for FSA Programs

    WASHINGTON, March 24, 2014 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Juan M. Garcia today recommended that farmers and ranchers who plan to participate in FSA programs register in advance. Producers are encouraged to report farm records and business structure changes to a local FSA Service Center before April 15, 2014.

    Enrollment for the disaster programs authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill, including the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) will begin by April 15, 2014.
